Cerebral palsy is caused by a defect in the brain development which happens in the womb before the baby is born. It is a disorder of movement and posture which is apparent in the early years. It is degenerative and can take a child from being active to being wheelchair bound. Other areas of the brain can also be injured which may lead to poor eyesight, deafness or other perceptual difficulties. Many children with cerebral palsy also have learning disabilities. The effects of cerebral palsy vary from person to person, from very slight to very severe. Cerebral palsy can result in sufferers having difficulties in walking, using their hands and with their speech. For those of us severely affected by cerebral palsy support, assistance and constant supervision may be necessary. As their cerebral palsy worsens sufferers may have difficulties in swallowing and coughing, this can lead to problems such as being unable to bring phlegm up from their chest, and their condition could worsen and eventually be fatal. There are three forms of cerebral palsy: 1) Plasticity; this condition involves the tightening of the muscles which in turn restricts movement. 2) Atheotosis ; this refers to the frequent involuntary movements often displayed by cerebral palsy sufferers. 3) Ataxia ; refers to the problems of balance caused by an unsteady gait. There is no evidence that cerebral palsy is hereditary and it is very rare for there to be more than one child in a family with this condition. |
