Down's syndrome is a chromosomal disorder which occurs when there is part, or all of, an additional chromosome 21 instead of the normal complement of 2 copies of chromosome 21.This is a new mutation rather than an inherited trait. Whilst it is commonly known that the risk of having a Down's syndrome child is higher in older mothers, the majority of children with Down's are born to younger mothers. Chromosome abnormalities give rise to specific physical features, people with Down's Syndrome often have very rounded features, small eyes and an enlarged tongue. In general they are very affectionate but occasionally can be known to be aggressive and violent, and therefore difficult to manage. Often they have associated defects such as poor sight and hearing, they have an increased propensity for infections and suffer with heart defects. People with Down's syndrome are prone to breathing difficulties while sleeping which will contribute to tiredness during the day, which in turn can lead to challenging behaviour. Most cases of Down's syndrome are sporadic but there is a small risk of recurrence in further pregnancies The range of cognitive abilities vary widely in Down's Syndrome , some can hold down a job even become professional actors whilst others may never talk or interact with society in any way. Their social functioning is typically higher than their cognitive abilities. Some have the ability to learn to read or master some other skill, they can be educated within mainstream society and have been known to achieve excellence. Others are dependant on carers for all their daily needs to be met and may never live independently .The vast majority of Down's syndrome sufferers are warm, friendly people who rarely display challenging behaviour and live within their community with little or no fuss. |
